As structural steel fabricators, we utilize various techniques to transform basic sections of manufactured steel into custom or predefined shapes that are ready for erection and installation. Working from detailed drawings provided by steel drafters and detailers, our role is to bring those plans to life. This requires extensive knowledge of steel properties and a keen eye for detail. It is crucial that these materials are fabricated with absolute precision to ensure they are ready for installation and that they arrive on-site in the correct order for assembly.
Steel fabrication services have significantly evolved over the years, largely due to advancements in high-tech computer software. For instance, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) systems now oversee and regulate the movements of machines such as routers, welders, and laser cutters. Additionally, 3D modeling has simplified the visualization of even the most intricate components. The fabrication process itself incorporates a variety of manipulation techniques, with the following being some of the most common.
Shot blasting
Steel sections undergo shot blasting to prepare them for fabrication. The primary purpose of shot blasting is to create a clean finish that facilitates welding and to produce a rough surface that promotes good paint adhesion.
Cutting
Steel sections are more manageable when cut to length before fabrication. This can be achieved using various methods, including circular saws, flame cutting, or plasma cutting techniques.
Bending
Many contemporary structures feature elegantly curved steel elements, necessitating that fabricators use a variety of rolling and bending techniques. For instance, steel can be processed through bending rolls multiple times until the desired curve is achieved. Additionally, press braking can be employed for simpler bends involving steel lengths of up to 12 meters.
Welding
Steel fabrication heavily relies on welding. This process is used to attach fixtures and fittings, as well as to prepare connections for installation on-site. Welding involves applying high heat to melt the parent material along with the item being attached. As the weld pool solidifies, the two materials fuse, creating a strong bond.
Coating
Coatings are applied to steel for both practical and aesthetic purposes, typically towards the end of the fabrication process. Advanced coatings protect steel against corrosion and fire, and they can also provide a custom appearance when requested by the architect.

Structural Steel
Structural steel is an exceptional material commonly used in building and construction. Its reliability and versatility are key reasons it is popular worldwide.
Benefits of Structural Steel Strength
One of the significant advantages of structural steel is its ability to be molded and bent into various shapes, making it one of the most structurally sound materials available for construction. The mechanical properties of steel depend on several factors, including its chemical composition, manufacturing processes, and heat treatment.
A major component in construction steel is iron, but the strength of steel can be significantly enhanced by adding various alloys, such as manganese and niobium. While these elements improve strength, they can also negatively affect other properties, such as ductility and weldability.
Additionally, the mechanical processing of steel contributes to its overall strength; generally, the more it is rolled, the stronger it becomes. Steel also boasts a high strength-to-weight ratio, meaning it is lighter structurally, which can greatly reduce overall construction costs.
Cost
In most cases, structural steel is the most cost-effective choice for construction. Over the past 30 years, advancements in steel production processes have significantly increased productivity rates. As a result, the time required to produce a single tonne of steel has decreased, making it a more affordable base material.
Improvements in steel fabrication and detailing processes have further contributed to the reduced cost of structural steel. Request a steel fabrication quote from us and see the results for yourself.
